March 3rd - The Dolls Festival

Momo no Sekku or Hinamatsuri (The Dolls Festival) was on March 3rd. It is traditional in most areas for families to set up a display of Hina-ningyo (princess dolls) in their house. This is usually a tiered platform with a royal court of dolls, with the king and queen at the top, and attendants and courtiers in ranks below.



Baba bought Hanna a new type of Hina-ningyo, like a mobile, and with the dolls made out of antique kimono fabric. The dolls are very cute with some babies and animals, plants and traditional objects - a crane, a turtle, owls, a peach, a goldfish, a rabbit, a butterfly, a drum, a fan etc.





And it is strong enough for Hanna to handle without breaking.
