The Yoyogi Hachiman Tanabata Festival is held on the Sunday closest to 7-Jul. This is around the end of the rainy season. The whole shopping street is closed to traffic for the festival, and we had a fine hot day.
The festival is small and has a nice traditional community feel. Some residents were selling second-hand goods like clothes and toys.
For me the main attraction is the local music group's performances.
There was also nice food to eat. These 3 young ladies are enjoying 'kakigori ' (traditional shaved ice flavoured with syrup, rather than ice-cream). On the right is Honoka-chan from our apartment building who recenly lent Hanna a tricycle.
Pony rides
And a big petting area where children could play with rabbits, hamsters and chickens.
Hanna was very keen to do this and qued-up determined to get her turn.
Playing with snow. I noticed that among the local shops it was the old traditional ones that participated most.
It looks like the owner of this sake shop has provided the snow, and is enjoying watching the children play with it. I like to think that he believes the festival is more important than fixing his roof.
An earthquake simulator from the Tokyo Fire Brigade. This simulates quakes up to a Japanese magnitude 6.
