It opened in the 1950s when Shatin was just an empty estuary and the new town hadn't been built. At that time it was almost on the waterfront, just behind the quiet road north into the New Territories. Bruce Lee stayed there when he was filming 'The Big Boss' old photos
Since then the estuary has been largely filled in and covered with tower blocks, and the hotel closed to guests in the 1980s. But the Tung Wah Hotel restaurant is still there tucked behind the railway line and motorway.
At night it is brightly lit with neon and lanterns. It very much reminds me to the hotel in 'Spirited Away'.
Once you have crossed the motorway bridge and negotiated the dim footpath, the entrance is rather spectacular.
The lantern tunnel opens out to a wide patio, and the spacious dining rooms, all retaining a 1960s charm. I like it a lot, they even have a small playground where Hannah can play on monkey bars.
The house speciality is roast baby pigeon prepared in several different ways.
